DESCRIPTION:
A truly spectacular and rare two-tier French Regency / Louis XV style sideboard by Rapids Furniture Company of Boston — one of New England's most distinguished mid-century furniture showrooms, supplying fine furnishings to decorators and discerning buyers throughout the region.
This is a statement dining room piece of the highest order — monumental in presence, exquisite in detail, and exceptionally versatile.
Design Highlights:
🏛️ Ornate Brass Gallery — The crowning glory of this piece: a dramatically scrolled brass gallery with central acanthus and fleur-de-lis motif flanked by brass rod rails and urn finials. Utterly unique and spectacular.
🗄️ Two Full Tiers — Upper tier with 5 drawers (3 graduated center drawers + 2 side drawers); lower tier with 4 drawers — 9 drawers total for extraordinary storage capacity.
🔲 Decorative Wire Mesh Panel — A refined brass diamond-pattern wire mesh panel backing the open middle shelf — a sophisticated period detail rarely seen.
🌀 Scrolled Corbel Supports — Bold scrolled "S"-curve side supports connecting the two tiers, one of the hallmarks of the Louis XV idiom.
🔩 Original Brass Hardware — Mixed bail and ring pulls throughout in warm antique brass — all original to the piece.
🪵 Warm Walnut/Fruitwood Finish — Rich, glowing warm wood tone with beautiful grain throughout.
Dimensions:
- Width: 60.25"
- Depth: 17.5"
- Height: 39.25"
The shallow 17.5" depth makes this an exceptional console, entry hall, or dining room piece — substantial presence without overwhelming a room.
About Rapids Furniture Company: Rapids Furniture Company was one of the finest and most completely stocked furniture showrooms in all of New England, located at 90 Canal Street in Boston. They operated as a wholesale distributor working through top decorators and dealers — furniture bearing their label was sold only through high-end trade channels, making pieces like this genuinely uncommon on the open market.
Condition: Very good vintage condition. Finish warm and intact. Brass gallery and hardware original and displaying beautifully. Minor wear consistent with age and careful use.
Note: This is a heavy, oversized piece requiring multiple people and appropriate transport for pickup. Local pickup only.
